(CBS News) The concern of gun control was barely mentioned throughout the presidential project. But is it possible that the Connecticut elementary school shooting could modify the political picture in Washington and prompt the first severe debate on guns in years? When President Obama made his opinions about the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, he was standing in the James S. Brady Briefing Room-- called after the previous press assistant who was seriously injured when a gunman opened fire on President Ronald Reagan in 1981, and whose name became associated with gun control. The Brady Act requiring background checks was signed into law almost 20 years back. The last substantial national gun control regulation, the Assault Weapons Ban, expired in 2004. "We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics," Mr. Obama stated.

Key:

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.
